Portugal was elected for the fourth consecutive year as the Best Destination in Europe, in the 2020 edition of the World Travel Awards.
Known as the "Tourism Oscars", the World Travel Awards are given by professionals in the sector and the ceremony in which they are released was replaced this year by a virtual format, due to the covid-19 pandemic.
From the extensive list of awards, Portugal won 21. "It is with particular pride that Portugal has received this prize in this atypical year and it is not only another proof of international confidence in the destiny, but also an acknowledgment that Portugal's attributes remain intact and ready to be discovered by all those who wish to visit the country.
Local authorities comentars about the prize:
"health, protection and trust are unquestionable synonyms of the national tourist offer". It is precisely these distinctions, in addition to the global prize for a better European destination, that must be highlighted. It is specially relevant that the country continues to win sustainability awards, as the best sustainable Destination Award, announced in March.
A goal is set: "We are getting closer and closer to being the most sustainable destination in the world. "
Portugal is to be congratulated for the investment that has been made in the re-qualification of the heritage and in the enrichment of the cultural and gastronomic offer, thus guaranteeing the Tourism excellence and the improvement of the residents quality of life".
These awards are the result of an online vote, attended by the general public and thousands of tourism and travel professionals worldwide.
The World Travel Awards were created in 1993 and the selection of nominees is performed worldwide by thousands of industry professionals.
