According to archaeological research carried out in the area of Sintra, the first occupation of this site occurred between the 10th and 8th centuries BC.
Later, as early as the 8th century AD, when the Muslims invaded the Iberian Peninsula, they built the primitive fortification there, setting up a settlement there which they named "as-Shantara". The objective of this construction was to control in a strategic way all the terrestrial routes that connected Sintra to Lisbon, Mafra and Cascais.
