Blue Flag 2020: 387 beaches awarded in Portugal

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

An extensive coastline with soft golden sand on every beach, a long summer and plenty of sunshine all year round make Portugal an obvious choice as a holiday destination.

Portugal will surpass for the first time this year the three hundred and eighty beaches (387) with Blue Flag, as announced the Blue Flag Association of Europe.

The Centro region has 46 beaches with this award, plus four over 2019.

Comments and reports in the international media acknowledging the quality and beauty of Portugal's beaches are commonplace. And it is no coincidence that 387 of our beaches fly the European Blue Flag, and 215 of them are classed as Accessible Beaches!

Home of a vast variety of beaches, Portugal remains the 5th Blue Flag position in European countries, although with a fast increase in the number of awarded beaches / marinas. The Blue Flag Programme started in 1986 with the aim to reward and distinct, among the public and local decision makers, the necessity to improve and protect the coastal and marine environment and also to lead to action to solve existing problems.
